Over Stranger Things' 4 seasons, friendship and love have been shown to be something akin to superpowers. These have had a powerful influence on the characters and yet they have also illustrated one of Stranger Things' key dynamics, which has been in place since the beginning. Throughout Stranger Things season 4, volume 1, trauma and memories have been key and constant themes. Even so, it also made sense to assume that if Max had not had such positive memories and the love of her friends to return to, there would have been no escape from Vecna's curse. Music evokes strong memories that are both good and bad, so it makes sense that it could open a doorway out of the oppressive alienation of trauma, despair, and guilt that Max found herself in. Nancy described it as " a lifeline back to reality" and there should be little doubt that she was right. This should not downplay how important the Kate Bush song was to Max’s survival. Instead, it was simply that he, Henry, overstepped the limits of his powers, which caused him to go into a coma before he could finish his father off. However, as Henry Creel/Vecna revealed at the conclusion of Stranger Things season 4, volume 1, music wasn’t the reason his father, Victor, survived. The belief that music would be able to save Max was based upon an astute connection made by Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) and Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) after one of Vecna’s first victims, Victor Creel (Robert Englund), appeared to be saved by hearing “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” by Ella Fitzgerald. However, within the red smoke of Vecna’s Mind Lair, it wasn't the song itself that saved her, but the memories it conjured up. What broke through to Max was the happy, loving memories of her friends, particularly Lucas and Eleven, and these were what truly allowed her to break free of Vecna’s grasp and escape. In fact, Max was on the verge of being killed by him when her friends played her favorite song, Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” and this appeared to be the thing that saved her. It was these feelings of guilt and trauma that Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) preyed upon in Stranger Things season 4. Related: How Is Vecna Connected To The Mind Flayer? The guilt associated with this and her failure to do more than just watch as the Mind Flayer killed Billy, weighed heavily upon Max and caused her to break up with Lucas and distance herself from her other friends. This culminated in the death of Max’s stepbrother Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery), who, despite having a fractious relationship with Max, laid down his life to save her and Eleven. So that’s where my hope lies in Max for season 5.These friendships were further tested by relationship angst, Soviet infiltration of Hawkins' Starcourt Mall, and the Mind Flayer’s attempts at world domination. Sadie ended by saying: "If she’s still out there, she definitely has a lot of rage and a lot of fight in her. She knew that there was no way she was going to make it out alive, but the fact that she was willing to make that sacrifice was brutal and heartbreaking." even though she was telling her friends if she’s made it out before, then she can make it out again. Sadie continued: "It almost felt like she was giving up. I mean, she said that she just wanted to disappear." In episode nine, when she gave that monologue, she was ready to go and she was ready to make that ultimate sacrifice. She said: "I think she’s at a place where she now really wants to fight. However, Sadie also explained to Vulture why she still has hope that Max may somehow heal in Stranger Things 5. Sorry, what? Braindead?!! How on earth are they gonna bring back Max from that? Meanwhile, on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Duffer brothers added more insult to injury by saying that Max is literally "braindead and blind and all of her bones are broken". So who knows where she is and what state she’s in." Who knows?!! We can't wait two years without knowing. Sadie then added: "But then again, Eleven is searching for her in the void and can’t find her. Right, that "definitely not back in the way she once was" is not giving us the "small glimmer of hope" we need. She’s definitely not back in the way she once was, but there’s still a small glimmer of hope." She then explained: "I knew in advance, but even when I was watching the episode, you fully think she’s dead. The script says you die, but just keep reading. They were like, 'Okay, so you’re going to die. Speaking to Vulture about whether or not there was any version of the script where Max didn't come back to life, Sadie said: "I remember getting a call from the Duffers right after they had sent the ninth episode for us to read. Stranger Things 5: Creators confirm Max is now braindead and blind.
