Rip currents : Strong, dangerous currents caused when normal currents moving toward shore are deflected away from it through a narrow channel also called riptides. Neap tides : High tides that are lower and low tides that are higher than normal when the Earth, sun, and moon form a right angle. Longshore currents : Currents that move along a shoreline. Littoral zone : The area along the shoreline that is exposed to the air during low tide also called intertidal zone. Intertidal zone : The seashore zone covered with water during high tide and dry during low tide also called the mitermle, or the littoral, zone. They also created the U-shaped valleys along the coastline of southern WORDS TO KNOWĮstuary : The place where a river traveling through lowlands meets the ocean in a semi-enclosed area. Glaciers created the fjords (fee-OHRDS long, narrow arms of the ocean stretching inland) of Scandinavia, Greenland, Alaska, British Columbia, and New Zealand. Glaciersĭuring prehistoric times, glaciers (giant, slow-moving rivers of ice) may have altered the shape of the seashore by cutting into it and leaving deep valleys behind when they retreated. In regions like northern California, where earthquakes and volcanoes still occur, the shoreline may undergo many more changes in the future. ![]() ![]() The sunken area became what is now San Francisco Bay and a new shoreline was created. An earthquake, for example, caused part of the California shoreline to sink. Earthquakes and volcanoes during prehistoric times may have helped form many shorelines. The underlying structure of the shoreline depends upon the shape of the land where it meets the ocean and the type of rock of which it is a part. Some happened during prehistoric times and others are still taking place. Seashores were first created when the continents and islands of Earth were formed. (The tides are the rhythmic rising and falling of the sea.) Seashores vary greatly in appearance, from flat, sandy, and washed by gentle waves to storm-battered and rocky or bounded by tall cliffs. The seashore includes the area covered by water during high tide and exposed to air during low tide, the area splashed by waves but never under water, and the area just beyond the shore that is always under water. Groundswell's design was inspired by the healing nature of the sea, with the goal of bringing the calm of the sand and the sea to patients and families. In addition to the beautiful design, the garden will include ongoing educational programming for patients and families, that will include everything from alphabet gardening and story-telling, to nutrition and healthy eating. The seashore, also called the coastline, shoreline, or beach, is the portion of a continent or island where the land and sea meet. Working directly with a team from CHOP, the Groundswell team, comprised of landscape and hardscape designers and installers, worked to create a vision for the garden that was true to the core philosophy that design should take a holistic approach and create moments beyond just the meandering landscape experience.ĬHOP is also thankful for a partnership with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, an organization that provided support for Sea Garden planning and planting, and will participate in ongoing upkeep. We also thank Johnny's Selected Seeds, which has donated all the seeds planted in our garden! Works as a colorful, fragrant, living extension of our mission, helping children with different challenges bloom and grow to the best of their abilities.Serves as a place where patients and families can be invigorated and also find peace. ![]() Just as they have different needs, the garden will host different plants: natives, edibles and eye-pleasing shrubs and flowers.
